What happens if you are caught shoplifting at age 17 as a first offense from a Kohls Store?

kohls
J F asked:

I will be charged in an adult court, and I want to know if they will ask me questions or just make me pay the fine and go on my way. I also want to know if Kohls keeps a long record of thier security tapes because Ive shoplifted from that store before and not been caught, and Im worried that they will review the tapes looking for me and add that to the charge. What typically happens in these situations? How does an adult trial for shoplifting go, especially in regards to Kohls in particular?

kiss ur butt bye bye dont worry about the previos lifting they cant hold it against you even if they did still have the tapes they have to prove that you did it and unless they caught you with the stuff theres resonable doubt …… youll probably just get put on probation so dont sweat it

ok. so this is what happens, your being tried as an adult, so they are going to ask you a billion questions, then they charge you, you plead guilty, then then fine you for a whole bunch of stuff, be prepared for your parents or whoever is paying for this, to be mad because their bank account will be very light after all of your fines are paid, you might also have to do some community service, and maybe interview some people about shoplifting. But if its your first offense you might not have to do as much, but they are triing you as an adult, so it could be worse then all of what I said. The same thing happened to my sister.

They won’t review old tapes…that would take forever unless you told them you stole from there before. When you go to court a rep. from Kohl’s has to show up as well. 80% of the time no one shows up from the store. If no one shows up from the store the charges will probably get dropped. As far as the penalties for your crime it depends on your situation and what you stole. It is all up to the county prosecuter and the judge. Most likely it will be a fine, or community service, or probation, or a combination of the previous mentioned items. I hope you learn something from this experience. It is people like you that shoplift that make the rest of pay more for services and products.

Entirely up to the judge. You could get off with a warning, or a tough judge will give you one year’s probation with community service (like picking up trash on the highway every weekend this summer). Also expect a hefty fine plus court costs.

First of all, I think you have a problem…. You will probably get charged with court cost as well as make restitution to Kohl’s and probation…. In my home town you have to pay probation a monthly fee… Maybe next time you’ll think twice before doing that anymore..Your almost an adult so this is your chance to start acting like one and take responsibility for your actions. Good luck with your life and Stop Stealing!

I suppose it depends on how much you shoplifted (stole) and the amount. One cannot determine what an attorney would say nor what a judge would determine. I don’t think you get a trial. Both attorneys will probably meet and discuss the matter and they will give you a choice of how much time you could or should get and you make the choice and it will come in front of the judge for finalizing. Trials are expensive and usually are a waste of time for shoflifted items so they most likely will not have one.

your best bet is go plea guilty. and if you have never been caught before, you will get probation. shoplifting trials are the same as any other trial for a misdemeanor. your most likely not going to get tried in adult court, because the offense is not serious enough. probation and a nice fine, and maybe a class on shoplifting.(unless you stole over$500 [in most states] to make it a felony) it is generally against policy to charge you with another charge of shoplifting, if it wasn’t witnessed by a officer. and they won’t waste time by attempting to review tapes unless a large offense occurred. (felony theft etc.) but most stores now have a ditigal recording system that allows them to store all CCTV info for years…. just so you know
civil demand will be sent to you in leu of a lawsuit aginst you from kohls. pay it, becuase if you don’t they WILL sue you and you WILL loose. it can be anywhere from 200 and up depending on the ammout you stole, i usually say that its about x3 the ammout you stole plus about 200 dollars

stealing is not a cool thing, its not helping anyone. all it does is force compinies to charge MORE for things to compensate to pay for the losses and the officers (ME) (sorry, i give a speech like that to everyone)
